Ellis Grey is the mother of Dr. Meredith Grey. Ellis was a famously great surgeon at Seattle Grace Hospital and a trail blazer for women in medicine, casting a shadow from which Meredith feels she'll never emerge. She suffered from advanced Alzheimer's Disease, leading Meredith to worry that she could suffer the same fate. Ellis was an overbearing, intense and driven surgeon and didn't make much time for parenting, often leaving Meredith at home or bringing her along to the hospital and leaving her for hours while she worked. Ellis was married to Thatcher Grey, Meredith's father, who left the family when Meredith was very young because he became aware of Ellis' affair with Dr. Richard Webber. She and Richard had planned to leave their spouses for each other, but Richard never left his wife.
