Lamar Wyatt is the father of main character Rayna James and her younger sister Tandy Wyatt. He is a business tycoon and philanthropist with ties to Nashville's political leaders.Rich, powerful and well-known -- Lamar Wyatt is respected by friend and foe alike. His friends do him big favors, perhaps even illegal favors. His enemies don't fare too well , and those in between don't want to get on his enemy list. But, as the series progresses, we discover that there is more to Lamar Wyatt then merely a wealthy businessman or a sinister power-broker.Lamar Wyatt has a tender side. But, it has been covered over by layers of bitterness caused by the death of his wife. And, that death is surrounded by circumstances that reveal even more undercurrents in his family's history.Lamar's money has shaped the city and the people around him. For reasons that are yet unclear, Lamar wants Nashville to have a new baseball stadium. But, when the city council disapproved support for the proposal -- the opposition having been led by family friend Coleman Carlisle -- then that prompts Lamar to put money and other resources into a mayoral campaign for Teddy Conrad, Rayna's husband. In the pilot episode, during the meeting with Teddy, in which Lamar offers to support Teddy's campaign, Lamar has some memorable lines. Fate is what befalls a man that fails to act. Destiny is for men that refuse to accept their failures as their fate. We've all had failures, Teddy. Don't let them define you; let them refine you. I believe in your destiny. Do you? ------------------------------------Unknown to Rayna for 20 years, Lamar Wyatt had financed her first record album. He had hoped that helping to launch Rayna's music career would repair their relationship. But, it was that album that enabled Rayna to break away from Lamar's money and influence. But, does Rayna know the whole story?Does anyone know the whole story? After all, this is... Nashville.------------------------------------Things got really dicey when Lamar Wyatt paid a visit to Teddy Conrad after he was elected mayor. Lamar had bankrolled Teddy's campaign. But, in between election and inauguration, Teddy shocked viewers by asking Rayna for a divorce. Then, news broke about the surveillance photos that Coleman Carlisle had commissioned during the campaign, and even Teddy and Rayna's daughters saw the news in the tabloids. Those photos showed that Teddy had been secretly meeting with his old girlfriend (Peggy Kenter) during the campaign, while Rayna was singing at his fundraisers! With all of that background, Lamar shows up in Teddy's mayoral office and demands that Teddy support the baseball stadium (which was the reason that Lamar had put Teddy up as a candidate). Teddy shocks Lamar by declaring that he had made a promise to the people of Nashville to run a clean office and not waste taxpayer money. Lamar counters by asking, A promise? Isn't that kind of like a vow?? Bam!--------------------------------------At the very end of Episode 16, I Saw the Light , Lamar Wyatt has a heart attack. But, can this tough captain of business really be out of the game??--------------------------------------Near the end of Season 1, we learned that Rayna James uses her mother's maiden name, because of her alienation from Lamar. And, there is a realization that her mother had an affair. (She discussed it briefly with Tandy during a visit.) Then, Rayna learns that the affair was with Watty White. Apparently, all of this factors into why Lamar keeps his distance from the music business. There is an implication that Rayna is actually Watty's daughter. (Will we learn for sure in Season 2?) Could that explain why Watty has been so helpful during Rayna's career? And, is it possible that Lamar has known this all along? (And, now that Maddie Conrad has approached Deacon Claybourne with The Question about whether he is her biological father, how will that parallel affect Rayna's relationship with Lamar ... and Watty?)As we approach the premiere of Season 2, is it possible that Lamar Wyatt will be seen in a whole new light? Has he really been a kind and loving father all along, but that side has been obscured by Rayna's misunderstanding of Lamar's relationship with his late wife? Are there more parallels between Rayna and her mother? Does the tension between Teddy and Rayna parallel the tension between Lamar and his wife? How will Lamar's recovery from the heart attack affect those parallels? How will sister Tandy react if Lamar and Rayna become close again? How might that affect the dynamics at the board of Wyatt Industries? (Perhaps the confrontation between Lamar and Tandy -- in the board room, during Episode 1.20 -- was only a preview....)How will the parallels affect Lamar's political relationship with Teddy? Is the baseball stadium project really only a product of a giant ego, or is there more beneath the surface? Will the sinister Lamar turn out to be a good guy that has patiently waited for the truth to come out, or is he a master manipulator of the city's destiny?Woo-hoo! There sure are a lot of onions to peel in Nashville! Keep watching....(this update written Thu, 19 Sep 2013, by TK--Blue_Beret )---------------------------------------- Show less «
