Lena Smith is introduced in season three as Annie's new boss at Langley. Lena is something of a rock star at the CIA and runs her own team, and she wants Annie for it. If Joan is the straight-laced, strict mom to Annie, Lena is the cool, laid-back step-mom, with fewer rules. She encourages Annie to follow her instincts and tells her not to worry about checking in from the field as often. One of Langley's double standards that does not exist in my division is a false hierarchy, Lena tells Annie. She also objects to the idea that male operatives are encouraged to sleep with assets for intel, but females aren't because they get too emotional. She essentially tells Annie to strike up a sexual relationship with her target, Russian-born Englishman and suspected spy Simon Fischer.Lena is mercurial and opaque, but because she has a track record of big wins, as Auggie puts it, she's given wide latitude at Langley. Joan cautions Annie to trust her instincts with Lena, but it's not clear what she means.Background: She served with Joan at the embassy in Nairobi in 1998, when it was bombed by terrorists, and the two women have lingering feelings of resentment and distrust for how everything played out.
