Lt. Andy Chung is a junior officer aboard the USS Nathan James. His rank is Lieutenant, Junior Grade (O-2) in the US Navy.Chung's specialty is engineering, and he is second-in-command (under Garrett) in the engineering group. Chung is a very intense man who takes great pride in, and responsibility for, his work and is always studying his craft, for which he is sometimes teased by his shipmates. He has an instinctual feel for engines and how they work; he once fussed at his crewmates because an engine was not purring and they didn't notice. He qualified for Engineering lieutenant faster than anyone Garrett had ever seen.Chung had to lead the engineers when Garrett was injured during an insurgent attack while the NJ was refueling at Guantanomo Bay. When the engines caught fire after the NJ narrowly escaped the Russians through a coral reef, Chung had to not only fix the engines while the ship attempted to reach the island, but also the water filtration and air conditioning systems. He consulted Garrett in the sick bay for advice when everything he'd tried (and she suggested after the fact) failed, and was at a loss as to what else to do. Garrett told him that he could rebuild the engines from scratch with his eyes closed and she knew he'd fix it. Chung, on orders from Chandler, rerouted all available power to the lab to keep the samples viable.Yet another crisis occurred when the air conditioning to the lab failed completely. Dr. Rachel Scott informed them that the samples would be destroyed if the temperature got above 41 degrees F. Chung had the idea to put the samples overboard and into the deep part of the water, which was colder than the tropical surface. He rigged a pressure-proof case for the samples and sank them overboard, where the temperature was forty degrees, thus preserving the samples. Chung also came up with the idea to rig parachutes to the propellers to take advantage of the winds from an incoming storm front, which would generate electricity for the boat and help propel the ship to the island in Serronno Bay. After tense moments without wind, the wind finally arrived and the NJ had power again while it sailed, with no engines, to the island.Chung worked himself and his crew of Lynn and O'Connor hard to get the engine working enough to get the NJ to Serronno Bay, where they safely docked for repairs and the crew was able to get fresh, uncontaminated water. When Garrett fell very ill during the vaccine cure human trials, Chung told her that she had to pull through, and joked that CHENG [acronym for Chief Engineer] Chung would be a crazy name for him.
